I glanced out the window, then nodded in quiet acknowledgment. "Thanks for the ride." I got out of the car and headed toward home. As I took my first few steps, I heard his voice, deep and quiet, calling after me.

"Rosaline..." I paused, turning slowly. "What do you need?" Jasper approached, stopping right in front of me. He looked atwith a seriousness I hadn't seen before. "Rosaline, will you givea chance? Will you go out with me?" Go out with him? The words hitlike a cold gust of wind. Didn't I already make it clear to him? Hadn't I told him there was nothing between us? I thought he'd moved on.

I hesitated, searching for the right words to say.

"Jasper, didn't we already talk about this? We're just friends.” "I know, I know," he said, his voice thick with urgency. "But Caden doesn't deserve you. He hurt you, and still, you can't even consider me?" 1 He stepped closer, his hands finding my shoulders as his gaze grew more intense.

"Rosaline, lettake care of you. Letprotect you. I can promise you, I'll be a thousand times better than Caden. You have to believe me." I felt my chest tighten. "Jasper, please don't do this," I said, my voice soft, helpless.

"Before, you toldyou found true love. I thought Caden would be the one to love you, to give you happiness. But that's not how things turned out, is it?" Jasper's voice was insistent, almost pleading.

Finished "If you know you shouldn't have, then don't," I interrupted him, exhaustion slipping into my tone. I lifted my eyes to meet his. "You have to get this into your head, Jasper. Us dating? That isn't going to happen." "Is it because you still love Caden?" he asked quietly, his eyes dimming with a hint of sadness.

I stood motionless, my mind racing as I shook my head. "It has nothing to do with him." Without another glance at Jasper, who seemed lost in thought, I turned and walked away.

The elevator ride was quiet as I made my way to my apartment. I pulled my keys from my bag, the metal cold against my fingers, and unlocked the door.

Just as I was about to shut it behind me, a shadow flickered across the dim stairwell.

A large hand shot out, stopping the door from closing, and a figure stepped into the threshold, blocking my path.

I stumbled back, my heart racing. “Who's there?" I demanded, my voice sharp and unsteady.

The man let out a low grunt, his presence unmistakable.

That voice...

In the soft glow from the window, his features slowly cinto focus.

In one swift motion, he reached forward and slammed the door shut with enough force to make the walls tremble.

"If you're here about Richard," I said, meeting his gaze firmly, "don't worry. I'll be at the hospital in three days for NO the next session." I paused, fatigue weighing heavily on me. "I need to retire for the night. Please leave." I couldn't make sense of his sudden appearance.
