Chapter 128 She immediately made a phone call.
Just wait and see.
The next morning, Effie got up right on tfor work.
After coming hlast night, Lyman had been in high spirits. In the end, both of them had stayed up much later than usual before finally collapsing into bed.
Even though Effie felt a bit tired, her mood was surprisingly good.
When she stepped into the living room, she found Lyman already busy making breakfast.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe couldn't help but admire him. No matter how late he went to bed or how exhausted he was, Lyman always managed to get up early and prepare breakfast.
It made her feel genuinely cared for.
Honestly, Effie would've been fine grabbing a quick bite, nothing fancy. But to Lyman, breakfast mattered. Maybe he felt guilty for being so busy all the time, always worrying he didn't take care of her enough.
"You're up. Chave sbreakfast," Lyman called out.
"Okay." Effie smiled, nodding as she sat down at the table.
They chatted idly as they ate together.
After breakfast, Effie headed off to the office.
But the moment she arrived, she noticed something felt off.
Her coworkers were giving her odd looks.
Effie paused, suddenly self-conscious. Was her appearance a mess? Then she remembered how Lyman had kissed her neck last night, and a wave of panic hit her.
He always said the side of her neck was her most sensitive spot, so... God! What if there was a mark? How could she face anyone? She quickly set down her bag and hurried to the restroom to check herself in the mirror.
As soon as she left, her colleagues instinctively gathered together, whispering in hushed voices.
"Did you guys see? Is it true what's all over the internet? Designer Bagnold never seemed like that kind of person to me..." A woman with tic makeup snorted. "Haven't you heard? Never judge a book by its cover. She might act all proper, but who knows what she's like behind closed doors?" "Exactly. Men only see what they want to see. Because she's pretty, you all just assshe's innocent," another female coworker chimed in with a scoff.
"Hey, that's not fair," someone protested. "I'm just saying, I judge by facts. I don't believe Designer Bagnold is that kind of person." "Neither do I. You're just jealous of her, that's all." The two women who'd been bad-mouthing Effie turned red with anger.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Who's jealous?" Their disagreement quickly escalated into a noisy quarrel.
Effie returned just then, frowning slightly.
She caught bits and pieces of their conversation. Were they... talking about her?
But she'd just checked herself in the restroom-her appearance was m perfectly fine. There shouldn't be any reason for gossip. Someone noticed Effie coming back and coughed conspicuously, trying to warn the others.
The group scrambled back to their desks, acting as if nothing had happened. That was a close call.
Gossiping behind someone's back and nearly getting caught-how mortifying.
Now they sat rigid at their workstations, eyes glued to their screens praying Effie hadn't overheard. Shirley hadn't heard any of this—she'd just returned from the records room.
Spotting Effie, Shirley asked, "Effie, wantto grab you a coffee?" Effie nodded. "That'd be great, thanks."
Shirley hurried off to make coffee, but she was back almost immediately, worry written all over her face. "Effie, have you... have you seen the trending news online?"
