Chapter 133 "Dad, I just wanted to teach Effie a lesson! She's the one who tried to seduce Mitchell. It tookso long to finally get together with him..." Suzan spoke through clenched teeth, trying to justify herself.

"A lesson?!" Shepard slammed his hand down on the table, making the teacup clatter loudly. "Do you have any idea who Lyman is? With a snap of his fingers, he could bankrupt the Bagnold Group! And you had the nerve to pull your little stunt right under his nose?!" Suzan flinched, her whole body trembling at his outburst. Her eyes reddened, but she still stubbornly lifted her chin. "There's no way Lyman is serious about Effie." What was she afraid of, anyway? Coward.

"You're still not admitting you were wrong? If your plan had actually worked, maybe you could've gotten away with it—no one the wiser. But you got caught, and they hit back. If anyone keeps digging, the whole Bagnold family could be dragged into this mess. Utter stupidity." Vera quickly reached for her daughter's hand, urging her in a low voice, "Suzan, apologize to your father. Now." Vera knew Shepard well-he never tolerated anyone challenging him.

Suzan bit her lip hard, and after a long pause, finally forced out, "...I'm sorry." Shepard took a deep breath, struggling to restrain his anger. His voice was cold and commanding. "Keep a low profile for now. Don't draw attention to yourself. I've already arranged for this to be cleaned up. I expect everything to be handled discreetly." He emphasized his point. Lately, he'd also been in talks with the Etheridge Group, so caution was more important than ever.

Suzan muttered begrudgingly, "Fine. I get it." After work, Effie packed up her things and left the office.

Just as she stepped outside, her phone started ringing.

She glanced at the screen, her heart skipping-she thought it might be Lyman. Smiling, she answered quickly.

But instead, it was Mitchell's voice on the other end.

Effie's smile faded. She almost hung up on him, but Mitchell seemed to anticipate that and hurriedly stopped her. "Effie, wait, I just need to talk. Please don't hang up." Effie furrowed her brows, her voice turning cool. "What is it?" "Are you okay? I saw the photos online. I'm sorry you got dragged into this," Mitchell said, uncharacteristically apologetic.

Effie pressed her lips together. So he still had no idea who was behind all this? She wondered how he'd react if he found out it was his darling Suzan who set the whole thing up.

Lyman had already asked Luther to investigate. The security footage showed Suzan taking photos from the balcony-she was the prsuspect. But when Luther's people interrogated the two scapegoats, they both insisted they acted alone, denying any connection to others. The trail had gone cold.

Effie stayed silent for a few moments.

Mitchell spoke up again, "Are you alright? Did this scare you?" Effie couldn't help but laugh. Really, did he think this was such a big deal? She hadn't even started fighting back yet-how could she possibly be scared? "Mr. Lloyd, if you're worried about causingtrouble, then maybe you should just keep your distance from now on," Effie replied evenly.

"You... I'm trying to talk to you seriously here," Mitchell said, his brows drawing together in frustration.

He'd called her the moment he heard about what happened, genuinely concerned. But Effie didn't seem to appreciate it at all.

His voice grew heavier. Effie was never like this with him before.

"I am being serious. Instead of calling me, maybe you should keep your girlfriend

in check. If she pushestoo far, she's the one who'll have to deal with the consequences," Effie shot back, E her tone sharp. With that, she ended the call.

Mitchell was left stunned, not even getting a chance to respond before the cold beep of a disconnected line sounded in his ear.

He sat there, confused. Did she just say girlfriend? Could Suzanbe m involved in all this? Mitchell's frown deepened.

Effie, meanwhile, let out a long breath after hanging up.
