Chapter 164 The men- Did Isabel really think these were the people she'd arranged to "take care of" Effie? She stood frozen, her mind blank with shock.
A wave of sour sweat stung her nose, making her stomach churn.
Every instinct screamed at her to get out-right now.
But as Isabel tried to slip away, one of the men stepped forward, blocking her path.
"Where do you think you're going, sweetheart?" Isabel's breath caught in her throat. She forced herself to sound braver than she felt. "Get out of my way! Do you have any idea who I am?" The man grinned, revealing crooked, yellow teeth. His foul breath hit her like a slap. "Of course I know. Someone paid us to be here." "That's right! I paid, I'm Isabel. I'm not Effie-you've got the wrong person!" Isabel blurted, desperate for them to understand.
Smack! A hard slap cracked across her face.

A cold wave of dread washed through Isabel. Something was horribly wrong. "You're making a mistake! I'm the one who hired you! Why are you doing this to me?" she pleaded.
What the hell was going on? Couldn't these idiots understand plain English? The men exchanged glances, then burst out laughing.
Their leader grabbed Isabel's chin in a rough grip, his reeking breath inches from her face. "We get paid to do a job. The client wants us to treat you real nice-and doubled the price. So quit wasting your breath and enjoy yourself." Isabel shook so hard she could barely speak. "You've got the wrong woman! I'm Isabel, not Effie!" Her voice broke with panic.
The man's patience snapped. He yanked her head back by the hair and backhanded her again, even harder.
Her cheek swelled instantly, going numb. Her scalp burned where he twisted her hair, as if he might scalp her at any moment. The pain was blinding-Isabel's eyes filled with tears.
She screamed, helpless.
The men only leered. "It's not tto scream yet, sweetheart. Save it for later- you'll need it." "Yeah, we've seen girls like you before. You'd better be nice to us, or you'll regret it," another jeered.
Then they started pawing her, hands everywhere.
Isabel felt bile rise in her throat. She was going to lose her mind.
Someone please, someone help! She wanted to scream for help, but this place was so remote, even if she shouted until her voice gave out, no one would hear her.
All she could do was pray that Carole would csoon.
The door slammed shut, locking them in.
Only a dim light flickered inside as the men crowded around Isabel.

Not far outside, Effie stood in the shadows, her face expressionless She'd already guessed it might be Isabel-after all, they'd been at each other's throats lately. But she hadn't expected Isabel to be quite so vicious, to go this far.
Effie let out a cold, joyless laugh. Now Isabel could reap what she'd sown.
What was it they said? Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.
Lyman was lurking nearby as well. Effie wondered whether herealized it was Isabel inside. But honestly, whether he knew or not, she didn't care.
If she hadn't been so careful, she'd be the one trapped in there right now! The thought sent a chill down her E spine.
