Chapter 6 She had already considered intimate life when choosing Lyman as her husband.
Effie wasn't the type to be overly tic, nor did she cling to old-fashioned ideas about marriage.
Still, they'd only just met-there was so much more to learn about each other.
Lyman glanced at her, noting her bashful expression, and a subtle smile flickered at the corner of his mouth. Remembering the phone call from earlier, he asked, "Do you need my help?" "You... don't have to. I can handle this myself. Just givea little time, please. Don't worry I'll make it clear to Mitchell that we're done." Effie hurried to reassure him.
Lyman was a bit surprised. Wasn't it common for women to want their husbands to step in on their behalf? "Alright. In three days, I'll have my assistant pick you up. Pack your things, and when you're ready, you can taketo meet your grandmother." "Okay." Effie nodded, feeling a wave of gratitude.
They'd only just met and already married, yet he was considerate enough to put her grandmother first. Effie found herself comparing him to Mitchell. She and Mitchell had dated for years, but he'd visited her grandmother only a handful of times—and even then, he was always impatient to leave.

But maybe it was for the best. At least now she saw Mitchell's true colors and could finally let go.
"If you need anything, just call me. For now, I'll take you home," Lyman said, his tall frsteady as he gently guided Effie toward the luxury car.
Effie tensed for a moment, but reminded herself that she was married now-she'd have to get used to it.
Life is unpredictable.
Who would have thought that just yesterday she was Mitchell's girlfriend, and today she was Lyman's wife? Yet Effie felt no regret. This was the best choice for her.
Once she got home, Effie tucked away her identification documents.
But what about the marriage certificate? Both copies had been taken by Lyman. His reason was almost ridiculous-he was worried she might misplace them.
So he'd locked them up in his safe.
Effie couldn't help but roll her eyes.
But it didn't really matter. It wasn't like she needed them for anything right now.
Her grandmother was already in the kitchen, making dinner.
Effie went in to help.
Despite her age, her grandmother moved nimbly around the kitchen.

Effie hesitated, then cup with a quick excuse. "I had something to do this morning, so I'll head to the office later. Mitchell's been really busy lately, so he probably won't make it." Her grandmother looked a little disappointed. "Alright. Mitchell's working so hard- you need to be understanding. When you get married, you'll have to learn to compromise." She continued to fuss over Effie, who stayed silent.
Understanding? Compromise? Shouldn't that go both ways? But Mitchell had never really done his part, had he? Not that it mattered anymore. She didn't need to worry about that in the future.
That afternoon, Effie headed straight to the office. She was ready to discuss company business with Mitchell.
When they'd started the company, she'd taken a 40% stake.
Mitchell, determined to prove himself and refusing any help from his family, had launched E&M Jewelry with her.
At first, it was just a handful of people; now, the company had grown to over a hundred employees and made a nfor itself in the industry. With a strong design team in place, Effie served as both the creative director and lead designer.
Every collection she released becan instant hit, fueling the company's rapid growth over the past two years. But Mitchell seemed blind to all this, convinced their success was solely due to his management skills.
His arrogance only grew, and now even the Lloyd family regarded him with newfound respect.
But soon, everything was about to change.
